Seconds of Light

Glacier Ridge Wetland Prairie

Glacier Ridge Wetland Prairie

Shooting more local areas this morning took me up to Glacier Ridge Metro Park in Plain City, Ohio.   I knew the sunrise was going to be special as I drove up the interstate and caught a few faint glimpses of fiery red clouds –  I started to drive fast!   I made it to the park and unloaded my gear just as the sky started to explode with color.   It was still pretty dark with cloudy conditions overhead and finding a subject fast to take advantage of this light kicked me into overdrive.  I found this group of prairie grass along the wetland boardwalk and took a couple test shots before setting up the tripod.  I managed only 5 shots on this subject before the fiery glow dissipated and turned to gray – total estimated shooting time of less than two minutes!   Having nice gear is good but being able to work in stressful conditions and knowing your gear like the back of your hand is key.  Knowing how to take advantage of the light that is presented to you in any situation doesn’t hurt either.   Always keep looking and learning!   Looking forward to sharing more images of light soon.  Thanks for viewing!  Vince

The other day I was out shooting at one of our local prairies when I finally remembered to take a shot of my camera setup for close-up and macro work.   In this image I have my Nikon D7000 mounted onto my Manfrotto 3221wn tripod via a Kirk Bh-3 ball head.  The lens is my Sigma 150mm macro with a Cokin P holder and GND filter attached out front.  Finally I have a Wimberly Plamp with extension.  I modified the plamp to include an additional clamp on the end.  This clamp allows for more secure applications such as holding larger reflectors and diffusers.   I simply attached the additional clamp to the end with zip ties covered with gorilla tape.  I’m using a 12″ Lastolite white/softgold reflector in this setup.   I’ll be covering many more camera setups at my upcoming workshop on October 23rd at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park.    Thanks for viewing! – Vince

This little leaf was very ordinary, just sitting in a puddle on a trail.  I almost walked by but decided to stay to study the light, composition, and reflecting colors.  I ended up staying for about 30 minutes.  I just couldn’t get enough of the tree canopy and blue sky reflecting down into this ordinary world.  Only after  several mosquito bites and many weird looks from trail runners did I decide to call it a morning.   Take your time, walk slow, and keep your eyes and mind open to what you might see.   Happy shooting! – Vince

Chasing Light

Chasing Light in Ohio

Chasing Light in Ohio

This morning I decided to scout a local natural area for the first time not knowing what I’d find. I was greeted with low lying fog and clear blue sky. These conditions required that I “wake up” and work fast to find the right subject with the right light. I seem to produce better results when chasing light instead of a specific subject. – Nikon D7000, Sigma 150mm macro. – Thanks for viewing! – Vince

Push your creative vision with NIK filters!

One of the most powerful tools I use for post processing is without a doubt the filters by Nik Software.   Their collection of filters enable me to push my creative vision beyond what I could only imagine.  These plugin filters run with Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture programs and are worth every penny.  My favorite filter sets are Color Efex and Silver Efex (for black and white)   The power of these programs is amazing and their creative power is endless.  Check them out at NIKSoftware.com!

This photo was shot with a Nikon D700 and processed almost exclusively with NIK Software’s Color Efex Pro -
