Eastern Redbud – Cercis canadensis

Native to the eastern woodlands of North America, Cersis canadensis has no equal when the magenta buds unfold in spring.  This is definitely one of my favorite trees that works very well in the urban landscape.  The leaves are a unique heart shape that will emerge with a reddish purple tint before maturing to green.   I photographed this leaf with the natural backlight of the evening sky as the sun set behind clouds of an approaching storm front.  I used a silver/gold reflector for fill on the right side of the image.   Nikon D700 with Nikkor 60mm macro lens and 25mm Kenko extension tube –  F32 @ 2 sec, ISO 400.
