A Contrast of Textures

Inniswood Buttercup

Inniswood Buttercup

I spent a couple hours this morning wondering around Inniswood Metro Gardens in Westerville, Ohio.  The early warm weather this spring has definitely pushed the bloom schedule ahead by about three weeks.  Always looking for the unusual subject I couldn’t pass up this fallen Buttercup as it contrasted against the dark textured surface of a shallow  pond.   F22 @ 1/8, iso 400.   Thanks for viewing!   – Vince

With coffee in one hand and camera remote in the other I took the long trip out to my backyard to grab a few shots of my early blooming Magnolia.  Spring has arrived a few weeks earlier here in Ohio but I’m not complaining!  Processed with Photoshop CS5, Nik Software Color Efex 4 and Silver Efex Pro 2.   Thanks for viewing – Vince

Seconds of Light

Glacier Ridge Wetland Prairie

Glacier Ridge Wetland Prairie

Shooting more local areas this morning took me up to Glacier Ridge Metro Park in Plain City, Ohio.   I knew the sunrise was going to be special as I drove up the interstate and caught a few faint glimpses of fiery red clouds –  I started to drive fast!   I made it to the park and unloaded my gear just as the sky started to explode with color.   It was still pretty dark with cloudy conditions overhead and finding a subject fast to take advantage of this light kicked me into overdrive.  I found this group of prairie grass along the wetland boardwalk and took a couple test shots before setting up the tripod.  I managed only 5 shots on this subject before the fiery glow dissipated and turned to gray – total estimated shooting time of less than two minutes!   Having nice gear is good but being able to work in stressful conditions and knowing your gear like the back of your hand is key.  Knowing how to take advantage of the light that is presented to you in any situation doesn’t hurt either.   Always keep looking and learning!   Looking forward to sharing more images of light soon.  Thanks for viewing!  Vince

Chasing Light

Chasing Light in Ohio

Chasing Light in Ohio

This morning I decided to scout a local natural area for the first time not knowing what I’d find. I was greeted with low lying fog and clear blue sky. These conditions required that I “wake up” and work fast to find the right subject with the right light. I seem to produce better results when chasing light instead of a specific subject. – Nikon D7000, Sigma 150mm macro. – Thanks for viewing! – Vince

Finding interesting and unique subjects is only part of the process when crafting a successful nature image.  The daisy in this image looked like many others I viewed this morning but it was the lighting and background that really made the difference for this photograph.   I carefully positioned my camera to align my subject and background to my liking and added a little light modification via a 20″diffuser and a 12″ soft gold reflector.   I also used a circular polarizer to enhance the overall lighting and let mother nature do the rest.   Finally, I decided on an aperture of F5.6 – just enough depth of field to render the important parts of my subject in focus and to add a little detail to an already gorgeous background.  Finding the right background that compliments your subject can take a lot of time and persistence but I find the results worth the wait!  Thanks for viewing! – Vince
